Super Summer Summary

Well everyone, what a few weeks it has been for tennis! Not only do we have a British Wimbledon champion, but our own courts have been groaning under the combined weight of what seems like half of the four villages (is that two villages then?) pounding up and down the tram lines attempting to re-create the spectacular events at SW19. The wonderful sunshine has helped too, as did our recent Play Tennis Day which in itself attracted over 20 new members, taking our little club into the ‘not so little’ category, now being home to over 160 members. There seems to be club or league matches every night at the courts, interspersed with coaching for the juniors and adults, with what daylight hours remain being used for general social play and practice. Clearly the ‘Wimbledon Factor’ always renews interest in the game, so it’s important that we all work hard to maintain the current momentum. It is fantastic to see the courts being so well used and appreciated by so many people, it makes the work put into the club by the committee, and so many dedicated other members, seem worthwhile. Long live EBLTC and all who play in her!

Junior Tournament July 13th

We enjoyed a fabulous day last Saturday at the courts, watching the long anticipated Junior Tournament. Nearly 30 of our Junior members participated in scorching temperatures, and fuelled by copious chilled squash drinks and our famous BBQ (with around 50 burgers sold…), there was some quite excellent tennis played! It was great to see so many people enjoying the courts, both on and off, and at one point we even ran out of garden chairs!

The full list of finalists, along with some photographs, can be found on pages 5 and 6 of this Newsletter, and we’ll put some more up on our website soon. In the meantime, we’d like to thank everyone who took part, and those who came along to watch and support our younger players. And, of course, to club coach Sara Leavy for putting the whole day together. A spectacular success and one to be definitely repeated next year!

Social Tennis Sessions

Confirmation that our Tuesday evening social sessions still run from 6pm to 8pm, alongside our normal Sunday morning sessions from 10am to midday. Juniors have their own dedicated social tennis on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm.

Round Robins are organised every month from April to September, and then over the Winter period, the Mike Venn Trophy tournament takes place, again monthly. The next Round Robin will be on Saturday 3rd August, call Jan Hale for details.

We hope more members will take advantage of these sessions in the current wonderful weather. It’s all included in your membership!

Family Doubles Tournament

Our Family Doubles Tournament, held on 9th June, was also extremely successful, attracting 18 pairs of players. Family members teamed up together to take on other families on a round robin basis, although we did have to trust people as we hadn’t got DNA testing facilities available to us that afternoon. We received some good positive feedback at the end and a couple of approaches for memberships, so we will definitely be doing it again. The winners were John and Florrie McKinnon (Red), Thomas and Benjamin Noithip (Green), and Alison and Wendy Lowe (Yellow). Well done to you, and to everyone who took part.

Like to play more regularly?

Some members have said that they would like the opportunity to play the occasional friendly game against other club members. However they don’t know who to call who might be in a similar position. So, Glenn has offered to maintain and publish a list of members who would like to be contacted by others on the list for the occasional (or frequent…) game. If you’d like to be included, then please let Glenn know by either calling him on 01525 220006, or e-mail glennwigley@hotmail.com

Clubhouse Break-ins

As many of you will know, our club has been the unfortunate victim of crime over the last few weeks, with our clubhouse being broken in to three times.  On each occasion, some of us have been called down there early in the morning to find roof tiles removed, a hole in the roof and, inside, a gaping hole in the plaster ceiling where someone has lowered themselves in to see what they can find and, of course, how much mess they can make in trying to find it. Fortunately we don’t keep money in the clubhouse; we have no bar, no alcohol or cigarettes, only a jar or two of coffee, some charcoal for our BBQ, and some tubes of second hand tennis balls. The last time they went off with a small trophy, which was later found ceremoniously dumped in a hedge. Such a shame.

We believe the young culprit has been identified, and steps are being taken to make them aware of the fruitlessness of their escapade, and the damage they have caused. The lesson we learn from this is the need to be constantly vigilant around our homes, possessions and organisations. We’d like to ask for every member’s help in this; let’s all keep an eye out for one another, whether it be our houses, cars or tennis clubs. If you see anything suspicious, question it, or report it. We should always keep ourselves away from potential threat, but vigilance costs nothing and can be the best deterrent; burglars do not like to be seen doing what is illegal.

Hopefully these instances will not be repeated, and we have already taken some additional ‘anti-break-in’ measures. More will follow.

Finally, a big thank you to those members who have given up their Sundays to repair the roof, cut down the shrubs and build a new fence at the back of the clubhouse. David Provan and John Jones in particular have been magnificent. The interior will also be fully re-decorated in the Autumn.

A Thriving Club

EBLTC is going from strength to strength! We now have over 160 members, 50 of whom are Juniors of a whole range of standards, from very beginners to a couple who have frequently represented our Ladies A team! Look at our season’s results so far, later in this newsletter, to see how we are doing This follows a very successful 2012 summer season, including our Men’s B and Ladies teams winning their divisions and securing promotions. This success is in no small part due to some excellent individual and group coaching sessions from our club coach Sara Leavy, and a full list of available coaching can be found on page 3 of this newsletter.

Peter found that winning the ‘over 65s’ took its toll after the second set.

Bedfordshire County Closed Final Results, Sunday 16/06/2013

We thought you’d like to see a summary of the County Closed Results held in June. The “names on trophies” section summarises the clubs which provided players competing in the finals. Congratulations were sent to Biggleswade and EBLTC, both three court clubs, for our excellent contributions to this list!

It’s also worth flagging up that nine of the twenty finals went to three sets. That’s unusually high and reflects the competitive spirit that ran throughout the matches!

Congratulations to all EBLTC’s winners and finalists!
