AGM report & New Committee

Many thanks to all those members who came along to our AGM last month.

26 attendees equalled the record of a few years back, and with a further 13 apologies most of our 135 members’ families and friends were in some way represented. Ross our outgoing Chairman gave a very positive report on what we’ve achieved over the last year, where the club has concentrated on trying to bring the members closer together. All major spending projects have been completed and now was the time to concentrate on the people in the club, and planning how we can move forward into the next 20 years of the club’s life.

The figures show that we are certainly not stagnating. Following another successful Playday (this years is on 20th June…) we continued to attract new players and our membership is near an all time high. Ross thanked all who helped organise the event and particularly Jon Moon who has been an excellent membership secretary. In addition Ross expressed a huge vote of thanks to Jon for producing an excellent web-site. Thanks were also expressed to Peter Hale who gives more than anyone to making sure that the club runs smoothly and gets things done without anybody even having to ask. Judy Venn has decided to retire from the committee and Ross reminded everyone that if was not for her and Lesley Lang who started the club, we would not be sitting here tonight.

Ross concluded by saying he had had three wonderful years as Chairman and thanked everyone for putting up with him, at which point there was chorus of ‘Resign’!! He knew that Bernadette Hillman would be a great person to follow on and he wished her and the new committee every success. Finally, Ross chaired the vote on this year’s Subscription charges, and the credit-crunching good news is that the rates remain unchanged, so please tell your friends how they and their families can still play tennis for as little as 63 pence each per week (example of family and two children; have more children and save even more!) or just 48 pence per week for a junior member!

The 2008 Club tournament cups were then awarded to Michael Tatham for the Men’s Singles, Glenn Wigley and Nick Boys in the Men’s Doubles, Jane Cross and Judy Venn for the Ladies Doubles, and to Jane Wigley and Darren Kerins in the Mixed Doubles. Further trophies were presented to Rosie Booth for Most Improved Player of the Year, Laura Bayliss for Most Improved Junior of the Year; John Jones won the White Horse Trophy for the Most Sporting Member of the Year, some fluky chap called Andy Cross won the Club Member of the Year (I think the 48 BBQ menu choices swung it), and Team of the Year went to the Mixed A team for finishing the season as runner’s up out of eight teams in their league division 2.

Bernadette thanked Ross for leaving the club in such good shape, having during his tenure, seen the resurfacing of the courts, and ensuring that there were no major fund raising issues for the coming year. The theme of 2009 would be to “have fun”. Bernadette would like to see more members getting involved and playing social tennis such as the ladders and Round Robins, which I can vouch for as being particularly entertaining – see opposite. Finally, Bernadette announced the appointment of Men’s Doubles Champion Glenn Wigley as Club President for 2009.

Full details of the new committee can be found later in the newsletter. If anyone would like an electronic copy of the minutes from the AGM (a paper copy is available in the clubhouse) then please e-mail me on andy.cross@med.ge.com.

Chairman’s BBQ

Put Saturday 11th July in your diaries for the most anticipated event of the Year. Unfortunately we can’t tell you where it will be, as the new Chairman is moving house but doesn’t know exactly where to yet. All sounds a bit dodgy to me. So make a note of the date, don’t go on holiday then, and full details will follow asap!

Social Events 2009

Here’s a taster of what’s lined up. For full details just call any committee member:

Saturday 11th April Round Robin at the courts, call Bernadette to book in. Keep an eye on the newsletter for further dates.

Saturday 18th April: Quiz night at the village hall. £9 per person, see If you’ve not yet renewed your membership, please try to do it this week; the page 4 for full details of how to book or call Ross on 01525 221411

Saturday 20th June: EBLTC Play Day. All welcome, member or not. BBQ etc. See Focus magazine soon for an expensive advert.

Saturday 11th July: Chairman’s BBQ at a venue yet to be clarified, depends on the size of the solicitor’s bung. Early booking required to avoid disappointment! All members welcome (juniors too of course if with an adult). Full details asap. Once we know where to find the Chairman.

More dates to come soon, including our Club Final’s Day in September, more Round Robins, and another potential Quiz Night in October.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy meeting old and new friends at these events, and we look forward to your support at as many that you can get to!

Play Tennis Day

Don’t forget our annual Play Tennis Day which we’re holding as part of the National Lawn Tennis Association’s ‘Play Tennis’ days. It’s on Saturday 20th June at the courts from 12.00am to 3pm.

This is a free tennis taster session for both adults and children, members and non-members, so you can bring along as many friends and family as you can muster; we’ll have spectacular offers available for any new members joining on the day!

There’ll be lots of fun tennis related games and activities, competitions such as Fastest Serve and Longest Rally against the Coach, free giveaways, tennis equipment and clothes for sale, plus our famous BBQ (small charge applies but there’ll be up to 48 menu options)! Our ball machine may make a special appearance too… so come along and have some fun for a few hours, even if just to sit in the sun with a burger and chips (bring your own chips…)

Social Tennis Sessions

Following some good feedback, our Tuesday evening social sessions will be extended as of 7th April, to run from 6pm to 9pm so that those who may work late still have the opportunity to come along. We hope more members will take advantage of these sessions as the weather improves. It’s all included in your membership! And don’t forget we also play on Sunday mornings from 10am….all are welcome.

EBLTC on the Web!

Membership secretary John Moon has designed our first website! Take a look at www.ebltc.org.uk and you’ll find everything you need to know about the club, including some good photos!

Round Robins!

Contrary to popular belief, in tennis talk a round robin is not a fat red-chested bird with a bad temper. And you can stop making up your own jokes! In fact it’s a simple tournament involving usually 12 players who alternate playing in pairs, against as many different pairs as time allows. Each player keeps note of how many games they have won individually, and that decides the winner. It’s so easy even I go in for them. And someone’s always there to explain the rules, and hand out the lavish prizes!

We’ve got four planned already; the first will be on Saturday 11th April with further dates to be confirmed. If you’d like to take part – and it really is a lot of fun – or have any questions, then just call Chairman Bernadette Hillman on 07958 714891

Food Humour and Dance

A big Thank You to all members and their friends who attended this evening arranged jointly with the Village Hall committee. Our share of the profits is over £700, which is a great start to our new year.

Membership

Yes it’s soon time to renew your membership for the next 12 months, so remember that this year there’s no rise in subscriptions. Just doing our bit to help with the credit crunch. So look out for the membership forms which will be delivered to your inbox very soon (or through your front door if you don’t have e-mail, but then you wouldn’t be reading this, so…oh well you know what I mean). We’d love to see everyone again for another year. More to the point we don’t want to have to send the chairman round to help you decide, not after what happened last year. I think that particular non-renewer did remove his racquet eventually.

2008 Summer League results

As preparations take place to arrange our summer fixtures in the South Beds league, here’s a reminder of how the final positions looked from last summer’s competition. Best performers were our Men’s C team in Division 4, who finished in 2nd place out of the 7 contenders, and the Mixed A team who finished a very creditable 2nd out of 8 in Division 2 with 5 victories. Our Men’s A team managed 3rd place out of 8 in Division 1 despite winning 6 of their 7 matches, such was the overall high standard of the division. The full final standings were:

These are extremely satisfying results for a small village club in a league which includes big names such as Dunstable, Linslade and Luton & Vauxhall. It was great fun to play such competitive tennis during 2008 against some high quality but very friendly opposition – we always enjoyed a few sarnies with a nice cup of tea and some cake afterwards, no matter who won! Congratulations to everyone involved in the teams. Our focus this year will be to bring our younger players up to the same standards, and the coaching team will be working hard at this over the coming months.
