June 2008

Play Tennis Day

Don’t forget our annual Play Tennis Day which we’re holding as part of the National Lawn Tennis Association’s ‘Play Tennis’ days. It’s on Saturday 21st June at the courts from 12.00am to 3pm.

This is a free tennis taster session for both adults and children, members and non-members, so you can bring along as many friends and family as you can muster; we’ll have spectacular offers available for any new members joining on the day! Chairman Ross has promised to do his best to avoid being admitted to hospital this year, so he may put in an appearance too!

There’ll be lots of fun tennis related games and activities, competitions such as Fastest Serve and Longest Rally against the Coach, free giveaways, tennis equipment and clothes for sale, plus our famous BBQ (small charge applies but there’ll be up to 48 menu options)!. Our ball machine may make a special appearance too… so come along and have some fun for a few hours, even if just to sit in the sun with a burger and chips (bring your own chips…)

Social Playing Sessions

Just a reminder that our social playing sessions – open to all senior members – take place on a Sunday morning from 10am, and a Tuesday evening from 6pm. The format is normally the best of 5 games then mix partners and repeat (sounds like line dancing), but if the courts aren’t busy and everyone agrees, then there’s nothing to stop you playing a set. We find the 5 game format has been successful at busy times as it means no- one has to sit out for too long, and also you get to play with a variety of partners against different opposition. But flexibility is our middle name…

EBLTC Newsletter: Like your summer holidays; ages between them but well worth the wait!

Some members have asked if the Tuesday session can start later, as they

If you’ve not yet renewed your membership, please try to do it this week; the find it difficult to make a 6pm start. The committee discussed this and

decided to maintain the 6pm start for those that want it, but to remind all members that they are welcome to come down later, maybe having arranged this with other members who also desire a later start, and of course there’s no reason why you can’t play on until 10pm when the lights have to go out. Most of the 6pm starters will be well gone by 7.30pm for their dinners!

Congratulations to Darren Kerins, Kevin Todd, Joan Tearle, Ross Bagni (hmmm), Bernadette Hillman and Peter Hill who have all won the chance to purchase Wimbledon tickets in the annual club draw. Just FYI, I am available any day to accompany anyone needing a friend …

There’s certainly a party atmosphere when club coach Simon Jones is on court – here he puts a few of our juniors through their paces on a recent Saturday morning. Pictures courtesy of Shelagh Bagni.

And finally here’s a photo from our 2006 Play Day. I’m sure you’ll recognize members John Palmer and Colin Pettifer – but what is that chap behind them doing against the hedge? See page 6 for details..

Easy Fundraising

Many thanks to everyone who’s been participating with easyfundraising – we now have 10 participants who’ve between them raised £63 for the club, simply by shopping online, at no cost to them. Think how much we could raise for the club if everyone joins in! So if you’re someone who shops online but haven’t registered yet, then please visit: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/eatonbra ytennisclub. Then, when you’re buying, remember to enter your choice of shop via a link from the easyfundraising website (or bookmark that link in your favorites).

June 23rd to July 6th is Wimbledon fortnight and if it puts you in the mood to get fit, visit easyfundraising’s extensive Sports and Outdoors category for all your fitness needs. Buy your sports clothing and accessories from SportsDirect, Kitbag or JD Sports and visit Holdall, Newitts and SBR Sports for quality sports equipment. There are even a number of specialist sports retailers such as Simply Scuba, Par Golfer Online and Lovell Rugby.

If all that running about proves too much, you can always visit PhysioRoom, the UK’s most visited sports injury website, for expert advice and products to get you back on your feet in no time.

But if watching sport rather than playing it is more your bag, electrical retailers Comet, Currys and Dixons have all the latest widescreen and HD TVs to make sure you don’t miss a serve. Or how about a trip to Centre Court itself? TheTrainLine is the easy way to book train tickets to anywhere in the UK, including Wimbledon station.

Summer League results

We thought you’d like to see the results to date of all the EBLTC teams playing in the South Beds Summer League. As you can see, the Mixed A and Men’s C teams are doing particularly well and clearly aiming for promotion! We wish all the teams well in their remaining matches, and a full report on the end of the season results and table positions will appear in the September newsletter (assuming all matches are complete and I remember to do it). Any questions then please call Jenny Baines our fixtures secretary, on 07811 032510.
