Membership Fees

You will receive your membership renewal forms shortly for the 2008/09 season. This year the subscriptions will be:

Senior

£71

(16 or over on 31/12/07 except as below)

Couple

£110

(Must be an ‘item’ so no, Peter and Ross)

Family

£132

(2 seniors plus unlimited family juniors)

Student

£27

(in full-time education)

Junior

£25

(under 16 on the 31/12/07)

Senior Citizen

£58

(Most of the committee are eligible…)

Unemployed

£58

(on production of UB40 (not the group))

Registered Disabled

£55

Social (non-playing)

£10

These fees are still lower than the 2003/04 season, and mean a whole family can enjoy a year’s tennis for around £2.50 per week, or under 50p a week for a Junior. That’s less than the cost of admission to Oxford United’s home games, and what would you rather do? We are also able to offer “easy payment” terms by special arrangements. Just call our membership secretary for details. He’s quite new so he might not know but he’ll know someone who does. All calls may be recorded for training purposes. Press # for more options, or stay on the line and one of our committee members will be with you shortly. In the meantime, here’s some muzak.

AGM News

Our Annual General meeting was attended by 19 members with a further 15 sending their apologies. The full minutes are available in the Clubhouse for your perusal, or just e-mail me if you’d like an electronic copy. Basically, the club is in its best ever shape, with three new courts, a good bank balance and a membership of 147. Our juniors are progressing very well under their dedicated coaching schemes, and the focus for this year is to bring more members together for both playing and social opportunities.

Worth noting here are the awards presented at the meeting for those who have provided outstanding service to the club over the previous year:

Most improved player of the year: Peter Hill

Most improved junior of the year: Alison Lowe

White Horse trophy for most sporting member of the year: Dave Hillman

Club Member of the year: Ross Bagni

Team of the year: Men’s B team

We can all be very proud of what the club has achieved over the last 12 months, and we go forward into the new year with renewed enthusiasm to make membership even more worthwhile for everyone involved.

Social Events 2008

We’ve already got lots of plans for social activities this year. Even without a social secretary! We all plan to ‘muck in’ and get the job done, so here’s a taster of what’s lined up. For full details just call any committee member:

If you’ve not yet renewed your membership, please try to do it this week; the

Saturday 26th April: Joint Quiz Night with the Village Hall committee. Last time 170 people battled it out – come and join us for a fantastic evening.

Sunday 11th May: Normal Sunday social tennis session, plus a BBQ at the courts, starting at 10am until early afternoon. All welcome for tennis, food or both. Small charge for the BBQ, so come and have lunch with us!

Saturday 21st June: EBLTC Play Day. Remember last years? The wind and the gazebo? Well we’ve a new one this year, and no-one’s put it up yet, so come along and watch us struggle! All welcome, member or not. BBQ etc.

Saturday 5th July: Village Fete, details TBA

Saturday 12th July: Chairman’s BBQ at Ross & Shelagh’s, Bower Lane. Early booking required to avoid disappointment! All members welcome (juniors too of course if with an adult). Prices and details soon.

October – date to be confirmed: Quiznight at the Clubhouse with food.

November – date to be confirmed: Racenight at the Village Hall.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy meeting old and new friends at these events, and we look forward to your support at as many that you can get to!

Call the Fashion Police !

In the first of another occasional new series, we look at some of the more unusual dress trends in tennis.

Easy Fundraising

Many thanks to everyone who’s been participating with easyfundraising – we now have 7 participants who between them have raised £30 for the club, simply by shopping online and at no cost to them. Think how much we could raise for the club if everyone joins in! So if you’re someone who shops online but haven’t registered yet, then please do so by visiting: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/eatonbraytennisclub. Then, when you’re buying, remember to enter the shop via a link from the easyfundraising website (or bookmark that link in your favorites).

Easyfundraising includes most major online retailers, and in addition the Insurance section includes all the well known insurers such as Direct Line, Esure, More Than, Marks & Spencer Finance, Sainsburys Finance, Budget, HSBC, Nationwide, The Post Office, Prudential and lots more, so if you’re planning to insure your car or home soon, log on to easyfundraising first to find yourself a great deal AND raise funds for us. For example, take out home insurance with Direct Line and you’ll generate £37.50 for us (donations apply to new policies only, not renewals).

You can also raise funds by booking your next holiday through easyfundraising’s extensive Travel section. Featuring all the main tour operators such as British Airways, Expedia, Thomas Cook, Thomson, Virgin Holidays, Airtours, Lastminute and many more, you’re sure to find the perfect holiday at the right price, and raise funds for us at no extra cost at the same time.

Ball Machine

Do remember that the club posseses a ‘state of the art’ ball machine which launches tennis balls at you so you can practice hitting them! It’s stored in the clubhouse, is free to use, and comes with full instructions on how to set it up.

British Tennis membership (just a reminder…)

It is a really exciting time at the LTA with the launch of British Tennis Membership scheme. at the moment there are only 90,000 members of the Advantage club. The launch of the British Tennis Membership scheme hopes to increase the British Tennis family to over 300,000 and provide a more direct service to the tennis community. The exclusive benefits of joining British Tennis are:

  • Player rating
  • Online entry to competitions and tournaments
  • Monthly e-newsletter with exclusive member content
  • Access to exclusive discounts
  • Advice from top coaches and players
  • Entry to your club’s Wimbledon draw
  • Membership card and associated benefits
  • Access to to add on benefits eg Ace Magazine and Grand Slam event packages

The good news is that you, our members, can access all these benefits for FREE! From March 2008 until March 2009 all members of clubs affiliated to the LTA can sign up for free and access the benefits above. We have it on good authority that the 2009-2010 year will also be free of charge. Clearly there is no obligation to either sign up at all or to continue your membership for longer than you wish, and you do not need to provide credit card details, so there is no risk of you being charged for something you do not want. There are Wimbledon tickets to be won in a competition for those members joining before 31st December 2007!

The quickest way to apply is on-line at this link: http://www.lta.org.uk/BritishTennisMembership/ and be member in less than 2 minutes!

Your affiliated club to mention on the application form is of course Eaton Bray Lawn Tennis Club. Remember to tick the relevant boxes if you do not want your details to go to companies outside the LTA. Finally, remember to tick the ‘I agree’ box at the end of the form to confirm you’re read the small print. I’ve gone through it and there’s nothing onerous there. Please feel free to call either myself or Ross Bagni if you have any further questions about the scheme or completing the application form.
