Autumnal Reflections
Well the nights may be drawing in, but the courts continue to enjoy plenty of action as coaching and social tennis sessions continue, and the balmy summer evenings of the South Beds summer league matches are replaced by those of the Winter League, complete with windswept tramlines and service areas covered in big wet brown leaves. However, unlike Network Rail, no type of leaf is the wrong type of leaf for us, and with the quick swish of our club broom, we can be back on court and rallying away before you can say ‘how did you miss that’? There’s still a lot going on, both on and off court, so sit back, put the kettle on (best do that before you sit back), and enjoy the Newsletter over a nice hot cuppa.
Club Final’s Day September 15th
Finals day was held on Saturday 15th Sept. A damp start and a long three set men’s final meant that the fixtures were a little congested with the men’s doubles playing on beyond the hoped for 6pm finish. Nonetheless, the BBQ stayed alight for most of the afternoon, and a good time was had by all participants and supporters.
The ladies doubles final was played on the following Wednesday due to the unavailability of the players. Winners for 2013 were:
Men’s Singles – Darren Kerins
Ladies Singles – Alison Lowe.
Mixed Doubles – Sara Leavy and Ian Morris
Ladies Doubles – Sara Leavy and Nikki Baylis
Men’s Doubles – to be played asap. Match scratched after 2 sets due to injury to one of the players (get well soon, Stuart)!
Social Tennis Sessions
Confirmation that our Tuesday evening social sessions still run from 6pm to 8pm, alongside our normal Sunday morning sessions from 10am to midday. Juniors have their own dedicated social tennis on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm.
Over the autumn/winter period, the Mike Venn Trophy tournament takes place on a monthly basis. Mike was one of the founder members of the club back in 1987, and this annual tournament is in his memory. Contact Glenn Wigley if you’d like to take part.
EBLTC Christmas Meal
We have booked the White Lion in Chalk Cutting, Dunstable for the club’s Xmas meal. It will be on Saturday 14th December at 7.30pm for dinner at 8pm. They have a varied menu at £25 per head excluding drinks. It’s a nice restaurant, and we always have a good time at these events.
If you’d like to go, please call Stuart Adolph as soon as possible, as places are going quickly, and we have currently reserved 20 with the option for a maximum of 30. First come first served (unless you’re sitting at the far end).
Like to play more regularly?
Some members have said that they would like the opportunity to play the occasional friendly game against other club members. However they don’t know who to call who might be in a similar position. So, Glenn has offered to maintain and publish a list of members who would like to be contacted by others on the list for the occasional (or frequent…) game. If you’d like to be included, then please let Glenn know by either calling him on 01525 220006, or e-mail glennwigley@hotmail.com
Summer South Beds League Results
All of our Summer fixtures have been completed, and the final tables published. Our Men’s A team finished 6th out of 7, Men’s B were also 6th out of 7, and our Men’s C were 4th of 7. Our Ladies team finished 3rd out of 6, and our Mixed team gave it a good go but ended up 6th out of 6.
Our Senior teams have enjoyed much more successful seasons, but these results illustrate the knock on effect of losing 2/3 A team players through injury or unavailability. Huge credit however has to be given to the Ladies team who missed out on bettering their position only on game countback.
In the juniors the Girl’s U16’s won the title! Mini Green and Orange finished mid table whilst the other teams picked up valuable experience. The full end of season tables appear later in this newsletter.
The Winter fixtures are now underway, and so far the juniors have a 100% winning start in the 4 fixtures played, and the seniors have won one and lost one.

A Thriving Club
Last Summer I reported that our club membership had reached 160. Well, following a spectacular summer of tennis both on court and on television, we have now reached our highest ever membership total of 172! That comprises of 103 adults and 69 Juniors. 22 of those adults are social members, which illustrates the importance of us maintaining our great social calendar.
Based on the 2011 census, that means that 1 out of every 15 people in the village is a member of EBLTC. How many village clubs anywhere would like to enjoy that level of participation!
This success is in no small part due to some excellent individual and group coaching sessions from our club coach Sara Leavy, and a full list of available coaching can be found on page 3 of this newsletter.
Hot off the Press…
The latest Bedfordshire rankings have just been announced. Across the whole county our club has players in these positions:

Alison Lowe – no. 4
Girl’s u14: Laura Williams – no. 7
Girl’s u18: Alison Lowe – no. 3

How good is that??! Well done everyone!
